Onyx is a form of chalcedony — the same mineral family as agate and carnelian — and the black variety gets its colour from fine-grained silica rather than from dye, though dyed black onyx does exist and is common at low prices. This one is solid throughout: where a dyed piece chips you will see grey underneath, and ours does not do that. In the Five Elements scheme black sits with water.

Black onyx is a long-standing material for bangles because it takes an even polish and holds a shape. Most of the inexpensive black onyx sold online is grey chalcedony that has been soaked in a sugar-and-acid solution and then heated to turn it black — a treatment that is legal and widely used, but one that should be disclosed.
We source undyed material where the base colour is genuinely dark, which is why our strand is slightly less uniformly black than a treated one and costs more. Under strong light you may see faint brown or grey banding; dyed onyx tends to look flatly black with no internal structure.
