Aquamarine takes its name from the sea, and in the Five Elements scheme blue and black sit with water — the element of depth, quiet and reflection. Aquamarine is the blue variety of beryl — the same mineral that produces emerald when the colouring element is chromium, and aquamarine when it is iron. Brazil and Madagascar supply most of the world's gem-quality material. In Western gem lore the stone was linked to sailors and safe passage; in the Chinese scheme its colour places it with water.
Every bead is cut from natural rough, so the strand you receive will differ slightly in tone from the photograph — paler in some beads, deeper in others, occasionally almost colourless. That variation is not a defect. Measure your wrist rather than your hand before ordering anything on elastic.
