A polished black obsidian sphere on a small brass ring stand. Obsidian is glass, so it takes a polish that most crystalline stones cannot match — a good sphere reflects a room the way a dark mirror does, and at an angle shows a faint sheen across the surface. It is the most reflective object we sell, and the most likely to show a fingerprint.

Spheres are the hardest common form in stonework — a ball must be ground evenly in every direction, and any deviation shows immediately when the object is rotated under a light. In obsidian the difficulty is compounded because glass chips rather than wears, so a single slip at the final polish ruins the piece. That is most of what you are paying for here.

Obsidian has essentially no internal structure, which is why it polishes to this level. A quartz sphere of the same size would be hazier and considerably more expensive for the same finish, and a sphere sold as "black crystal" at a low price is usually glass.

One safety note we take seriously: a clear or dark sphere near a window can focus sunlight like a lens. Keep this on a shelf away from direct sun rather than in front of one.

Details

Material
Natural black obsidian (volcanic glass), solid, polished; brass ring stand (alloy)
Size & weight
Sphere diameter 60 / 80 mm; overall height with stand approx. 80 / 105 mm; approx. 250 / 590 g
Safety
Decorative object, not a toy. Keep away from children. Obsidian is glass: a sphere will chip or crack if it falls, and it is heavy enough to damage a surface. Keep away from window edges where sunlight could focus through it.
