How to Tell if a Crystal Is Real

Around the eighth century BCE, a man named Bian He found a piece of jade rough on Jing Mountain in Chu and did the honest thing: he presented it to his king. The court's expert looked at the dirty stone and called it worthless. For presenting a fake, Bian He's left foot was cut off. When the next king took the throne, he tried again, and lost his right foot for the same verdict. It was only under a third king that someone finally cut the stone open — and inside was the jade that would become the most famous gemstone in Chinese history, later carved, legend says, into the First Emperor's own seal.

Two royal courts, with experts, got it wrong. The real-or-fake question is at least that old, and nobody has ever been too important to fail it.

You don't need fire, magnets, vinegar or a $200 gem tester. Nearly every fake in the bracelet market gets caught by a phone flashlight, ten seconds against your wrist, two direct questions, and three price numbers worth memorising. Ten minutes, no cost. The harder half is unlearning — half the tests the internet teaches are worse than useless, and they persist because nobody performing them on camera has to live with your beads afterwards.

Faking it is as old as valuing it

Bian He's story is about a fake verdict on a real stone, but deliberate imitation has just as long a pedigree, and both China and Rome were early experts.

When glass first reached China it was precious in its own right, but by the Warring States period workshops had learned to cast a lead-rich glass — liuli 琉璃 — in the shape of jade: glass bi discs and glass sword fittings turn up in Han tombs, made for families who wanted the look of jade without the price. Some of it was honest substitution, some of it wasn't, and telling them apart two thousand years later keeps archaeologists busy.

Rome had the same economy. Pliny the Elder devoted a book of his Natural History to gemstones and, between the cataloguing, complains constantly about fakes — glass pastes sold as emerald and amethyst, and workshops that existed to produce them. His proposed tests were roughly as reliable as the internet's are now. The pattern hasn't changed in two thousand years: wherever a material becomes valuable, a cheaper lookalike follows within a generation, and an honest seller somewhere writes down how to tell them apart. This article is one more entry in that ledger.

Start by throwing out the bad tests

The burn test. Plastic melts, stone doesn't — true, but it proves nothing positive: glass and resin both survive a two-second flame, and obsidian behaves exactly like the impostor it's accused of being. The bead then carries a scorch mark no honest shop will accept as a return reason.

The scratch test. The physics is right and the application is vandalism: scratching your own beads damages real stones and fakes identically, and the hardness scale can't separate quartz from glass at bead scale.

The vinegar soak. Built for detecting dye, ruined by dosage: a vinegar bath is weak enough that dye held by anything sturdier than tissue paper survives overnight, while your bracelet comes out smelling like a salad.

The magnet test. Magnets react to iron and a few metals, and almost nothing in this market contains either.

The hot needle on amber. There are real telltales, but they involve burnt-smell expertise and destroying a sample you'd need to be an expert to read. For a wearer, the smart version of amber testing is a certificate.

The pattern worth internalising: any test that damages the sample is a test performed on the wrong person's jewellery.

The six checks

Four tools, used carefully.

1. The flashlight. Shine your phone's light through the beads. Real stone is busy: veils, banding, inclusions, bead-to-bead differences. Perfect uniformity is a suspicion, and perfectly round bubbles in neat rows convict man-made glass. Limit: obsidian is itself a natural glass and often has no bubbles, so this convicts glass only when it finds it.

2. The wrist. Stone and glass pull heat from skin and feel cool on first contact; plastic feels neutral-warm. Limit: this separates mineral from plastic, never mineral from glass, and any bead warms within half a minute. First contact or nothing.

3. The weight. Mineral outweighs plastic at the same size; a known-real reference bead and thirty seconds of hand comparison beats any app. Limits: useless without a reference, and blind to glass and dyed stone, which weigh like the real thing.

4. The two questions. Ask in writing where possible: "Is this natural, treated, or man-made?" and, if natural, "Will you write that on the receipt?" A tool inspects the object; a question inspects the seller. An honest one answers the first in a sentence, because "dyed" and "heat-treated" are legal, disclosed, and often exactly what you want at that price. A dishonest one develops a fondness for the word "basically." The second question is the contract — verbal claims evaporate, receipts don't. Limit: a confident liar passes both, which is why they ride along with the flashlight and the wrist.

5. Three price anchors. Memorise three numbers and most scams lose their cover of plausibility.

  • Obsidian is volcanic glass and common on purpose. Raw strands trade at wholesale for a few dollars and finished bracelets retail at $15–40, so a $200 "rare rainbow obsidian" is a price test aimed at you.
  • Citrine with strong natural colour is scarce. Shelf "citrine" is amethyst baked gold — real quartz, honest when disclosed. A $30 "natural citrine" strand is undisclosed heat treatment.
  • Jade is the dangerous one. Fine jadeite trades above gold by the gram; anything jade-coloured under $50 is, in practice, dyed quartzite.

Prices drift with fashion and supply, so anchors calibrate suspicion rather than convict.

6. The UV light, gently. A small UV torch makes many resins fluoresce a flat, even blue-white that natural stone rarely matches; if half your "stone" bracelet glows like a concert poster, it's resin. Limits: the weakest check here, kept because it damages nothing. Some minerals fluoresce too, and obsidian ignores UV. A tiebreaker, nothing more.

The usual impostors

Five characters account for most of the fakery in this market.

Dyed howlite sold as turquoise. Howlite is soft, white and porous — a sponge for dye. Dye follows the path of least resistance, so colour pools along cracks like rivers on a map. Genuine turquoise is uneven but organic, with no ink lines.

Baked amethyst sold as citrine. The largest impersonation by volume: natural citrine is pale and smoky, while shelf citrine in loud orange-gold has been in an oven.

Dyed quartzite sold as jade. Cheap and happy to absorb green dye, the default under $50. The colour sits in grain boundaries like a stain, and it feels lighter than jadeite.

Resin sold as cinnabar. Real cinnabar is mercury ore and was never going to sit against skin, so every "cinnabar" bracelet is resin. The deception isn't the material, it's the omission — a shop letting you believe a word it never said. Resin feels warm, may glow under UV.

Glass sold as obsidian. Cheap "rainbow obsidian" is mostly coated glass: round bubbles in rows, or a rainbow that shifts like oil on water. Plain black glass can pass for plain black obsidian, so the price anchor matters more here than any tool.

Also watch for dyed quartz sold as "strawberry quartz" — the genuine article carries glittering red flecks.

Three strands, three price points

A $12 black obsidian Pixiu strand. Unlikely fraud: material costs a few dollars at wholesale, so $12 covers stone, carving, string and shipping with margin intact, and nobody needs to lie at that price. You're buying carving and knot work, not mineral value.

A $35 "natural citrine" strand. Price alone predicts the answer: clean, even golden saturation with no smoky zones is baked amethyst. A seller who says "heat-treated, yes" keeps your trust; one who insists on "100% natural" has turned your bracelet into a lesson.

A $180 "jade" bracelet. Too expensive to be dyed quartzite at an honest markup, nowhere near genuine jadeite. Here the two questions aren't optional and the receipt claim is everything.

What the three share: the tools rarely convict alone. Price raises the question, the flashlight narrows it, the questions close it.

Certificates: the paper isn't the proof

Sooner or later a seller slides a certificate photo across the chat — glossy logo, gold seal, Latin name in italics. Paper is a material too, and materials get forged. A genuine certificate proves exactly one thing: that the named lab examined the named item.

Three tests separate real from printed. The lab must be real and named — GIA or IGI for gems, NGTC for jade. A certificate signed by "International Gem Authority Ltd." with no address is signed by nobody. The number must be verifiable on the lab's own site, returning the same stone and verdict. And the economics have to make sense: a single-stone report costs real money, often more than a $12 bracelet, so certificates belong where value concentrates — fine jadeite, amber, anything three figures and up.

Quick answers

One bead has a round bubble — fake? Not convicted. A stray void can be a natural gas pocket; a neat row of identical bubbles is the man-made fingerprint.

Is heat-treated citrine fake? No. It's real amethyst, real quartz, permanently golden. Treatment is a fact; undisclosed treatment is the lie.

It failed the weight check, was I robbed? Probably you failed the test's conditions — no reference bead, one small strand.

Bian He waited through two kings and two amputations for someone to simply cut the stone open. You have a flashlight. Damage proves nothing and drama isn't evidence: flashlight, wrist, weight, two questions, three price anchors. Cheap tools, honest limits, ten minutes.
