A flat jade disc with a hole in the centre — a bi — is one of the oldest shapes in Chinese stonework, made in nephrite long before it was made in jadeite. This pendant is cut in that form and hung on a nylon cord. In Chinese custom it is worn as a wish for safety and completion; the disc is a shape, and the meaning is one people have attached to it. The bi disc appears in Chinese archaeological sites from the Neolithic period onward, made in nephrite with a surface polished by grinding rather than by lathe. Whether it was originally a ritual object, a weight, or simply a decoration is still argued about; what is not in doubt is that it has been a recognised form for thousands of years.
In modern use it is a pendant, worn as a wish for safety. The shape's long history is the reason it is still cut, and it is the reason we do not need to attach any claim to it beyond that.
