Large brass vessels are raised — hammered from flat sheet over a form — rather than cast, because casting something this size hollow is difficult and casting it solid is impractical. The hammering work-hardens the metal and leaves a faceted surface, which a good maker will keep rather than grind away.
This one keeps the hammer marks. It is patinated and given a fitted base so it stands square. At about 3.2 kg it is stable, but it is tall enough that it should not be in a walkway.
