A large brass qilin built as a floor piece, cast in sections and welded, with the mane and scales chased by hand after assembly. The surface is finished matte with polished highlights along the spine and the horns.

At half a metre tall, a qilin is a piece of furniture. It is cast in sections on a sand mould, welded together, then chased by hand — the scales on the body and the curl of the mane are all cut after assembly, because the mould cannot hold that detail across a joint.
4.2 kg of solid brass. It has an honest weight to it, and that is the thing to check with large brass: reject any version that feels light for its size, because lightness means hollow casting or a resin core. Felt pads on the feet.
