The longgui — dragon turtle — is a creature from Chinese cosmology: a turtle shell under a dragon head, said to carry the weight of the world. Small versions are kept on desks and in offices. This one is solid brass with the shell divided into raised plates and the head modelled in detail.

In the Chinese telling, a dragon turtle carried the island of the immortals on its back; the image also appears on imperial seals and on stone monuments. As a desk object it is one of the more sculptural shapes in Chinese metalwork — there is more form to it than a coin or a gourd.
This version is a solid casting, not hollow, which shows in the weight. The shell plates are raised on the mould and then worked over by hand, so the definition varies a little from piece to piece.
