Nephrite from the Hetian region is the material Chinese sources have prized since at least the Han dynasty, and it is genuinely different from the hard, glassy jade familiar from Burmese jadeite: the fibres inside nephrite interlock, giving it a toughness that makes it ideal for carving fine detail without fracture, and it polishes to a soft, almost greasy sheen rather than a mirror finish.
"Hetian" describes a region and a quality tradition rather than a formal mineral classification, and the trade uses the term loosely. We use it to mean nephrite of the pale white-to-grey-green tones associated with that material, in a solid carved piece, and we do not claim a specific mine or an appraisal grade.
We include a soft pouch. The silk cord should be inspected periodically, as silk ages and chafes where it passes through the hole in the stone.
