Long before personality tests, China had the sexagenary calendar: a cycle of ten Heavenly Stems (天干) and twelve Earthly Branches (地支) that together track time in sixty combinations. Your BaZi chart is simply the calendar reading at your birth moment — captured at four checkpoints:
Each pillar is one Stem + one Branch pair (for example 庚午 Geng-Wu). Eight characters total — hence the name Ba-Zi, "Eight Characters" (八字).
The Five Elements: Wu Xing 五行
Every Stem and Branch belongs to one of five elements. Your chart's elemental mixture is the heart of all interpretation:
The elements are not static labels — they generate and control each other in a perpetual cycle: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal collects Water, Water nourishes Wood. A strong chart isn't one without "weakness," but one whose flows remain livable and dynamic.
Your Day Master 日主
The single most important character in your chart is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — your Day Master. It represents you: your core identity, your default way of meeting the world. Everything else in the chart is read as a relationship to it — what supports you, what challenges you, what you produce, what you attract.
Ten-Year Cycles 大运
Beyond the birth chart itself, BaZi maps how your luck moves: ten-year chapters called Da Yun (大运), each governed by a new Stem-Branch pair. A Wood-dominant person entering a Water decade traditionally reads differently than the same person entering a Metal decade. Timing, in this tradition, is everything.
What BaZi Is — and Isn't

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my exact birth time?
The hour sets your fourth pillar. Without it, you still get your Day Master — the core of the reading. With it, the picture gains your "inner world" and children palace.
Is this the same as Chinese zodiac?
Related but deeper. Your zodiac animal (Rat, Dragon, Horse…) is just the Year Branch. BaZi uses all four pillars — 8 characters instead of 1 — making it far more individualized.
What about "true solar time"?
Serious practitioners adjust birth time by longitude. Our engine uses standard local clock time; if you were born far from your time zone's meridian, your Time Pillar may be worth verifying with a master.
